At the Faint Sound So Brief
four-channel sound, 10 speakers, extension cords, transducers, amplifier, speaker wire, 21min
2017
A site specific sound installation presented at Art Center College of Design's hillside campus on the bridge that overlooks a gully and beyond that the San Gabriel Mountains. The sound being played through the channels along side the edge of the bridge accessed the structure of steel I-beams used in constructing the iconic hillside bridge to create an undulating and modulated sequence of sounds that 'expanded' within the intangible space as they bounced off of one steel beam to the next continually folding in space and expanding it as the viewer experienced the work. The sound renders a utopic comfort and hope for the future.
The title is being adopted from a poem of Samuel Beckett, and the poem "Something there" is being used in sound as well.
"something there
where
out there
out where
outside
what
the head what else
something there somewhere outside
the head
at the faint sound so brief
it is gone and the whole globe
not yet bare
the eye
opens wide
wide
till in the end
nothing more
shutters it again
so the odd time
out there
somewhere out there
like as if
as if
something
not life
necessarily"
